Bathing the Buddha Online

Language▼

As we pour the fragrant water to bathe the Buddha statue, we must reflect on and repent the faults in our bodily, verbal, and mental actions. This represents our aspiration to eradicate our attachment, greed, hatred, jealousy, arrogance, and ignorance, while vowing to grow in wisdom and purify our mind, thereby reminding ourselves to return to and retrieve our pure Buddha nature.

The Ritual Procedure for Bathing the Buddha

With palms joined, sincerely recite

"Namo (Homage) to original teacher Sakyamuni Buddha" 10 times.

Recite the Verse of Bathing the Buddha in mind

"I now sincerely bathe all the Buddhas, who have cultivated pure wisdom, dignity, and virtuous merits. May sentient beings free themselves from afflictions, and realize the same true essence of all the Buddhas.”

Take three separate scoops of water to pour on the Buddha statue. Each time as you are pouring, make a vow:

(The first vow) I vow to refrain from all evil.
(The second vow) I vow to cultivate what is good.
(The third vow) I vow to deliver all sentient beings.

Recite the Transfer of Merit Verse and bow

May we all eradicate the three hindrances and vexations; may we all attain wisdom and enlightenment.
